Phosphorus limitation determines the quality of dissolved organic matter released by marine heterotrophic prokaryotes

چکیده
We determined phosphorus (P) limitation effect on the quantity and quality of dissolved organic matter (DOM) released by heterotrophic prokaryotes (HP). grew two single-bacterial strains from different lifestyles, copiotrophic Photobacterium angustum oligotrophic Sphingopyxis alaskensis, natural HP communities collected in fall spring Mediterranean Sea, glucose under treatments: P-replete versus P-limiting. DOM release comprised up to 30% initial carbon provided for growth. P-availability influenced allocation cellular processes (respiration vs. growth), but did not significantly affect net HP. However, using fluorescence spectroscopy, we demonstrated an P-limitation quality, with a predominance humic-like compounds protein-like P-repletion. Our results suggest that could determine fate HP-derived ocean, thus affecting microbial pump.

Characterization of dissolved organic matter released from Microcystis aeruginosa.
The contribution of dissolved organic matter (DOM) released from phytoplankton (Microcystis aeruginosa) during cultivation and biodegradation was examined to clarify the causes of the organic pollution of Lake Biwa. Two peaks, peak 2 (retention time (RT) = 32 min) and peak 3 (RT = 35 min), were detected in the algal DOM released from Microcystis aeruginosa during cultivation and biodegradation ...
متن کاملDifferential utilization patterns of dissolved organic phosphorus compounds by heterotrophic bacteria in two mountain lakes
Although phosphorus limitation is common in freshwaters and bacteria are known to use dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP), little is known about how efficiently DOP compounds are taken up by individual bacterial taxa. Here, we assessed bacterial uptake of three model DOP substrates in two mountain lakes and examined whether DOP uptake followed concentration-dependent patterns. We determined bulk...
متن کاملLimitation of bacterial growth by dissolved organic matter and iron in the Southern ocean.
The importance of resource limitation in controlling bacterial growth in the high-nutrient, low-chlorophyll (HNLC) region of the Southern Ocean was experimentally determined during February and March 1998. Organic- and inorganic-nutrient enrichment experiments were performed between 42 degrees S and 55 degrees S along 141 degrees E. Bacterial abundance, mean cell volume, and [(3)H]thymidine and...

متن کاملExperimental Evidence for Abiotic Sulfurization of Marine Dissolved Organic Matter
Dissolved organic sulfur (DOS) is the largest pool of organic sulfur in the oceans, and as such it is an important component of the global sulfur cycle. DOS in the ocean is resistant against microbial degradation and turns over on a millennium time scale. However, sources and mechanisms behind its stability are largely unknown. Here, we hypothesize that in sulfate-reducing sediments sulfur is a...
